How does this differ from markdown ~~strikethrough~~?
Markdown styling lives in the destination’s renderer and vanishes elsewhere; combining characters ride inside the text and survive any paste. The cost: heavier text and rougher screen-reader behaviour — use for effect, not essays.
Why does struck text sometimes look broken?
Each visible letter is two characters — the letter plus a combining overlay — and fonts vary in how neatly they stack them. Some platforms also strip combining marks entirely. Where it works, it works everywhere in that text.
