Gender Symbols FAQ
Where do these symbols come from?
The planetary marks for Venus and Mars, borrowed by science in the eighteenth century and extended since with combined and struck forms. Each entry is named so the meaning travels with the mark.
Why does it look different on my friend’s phone?
Every platform draws Unicode characters with its own fonts, so the same character can look subtly (or wildly) different between devices. The character you copy is identical everywhere; only the drawing changes.
