Can I sell products with a number I invented?
The barcode will SCAN, but retail systems look the number up in GS1’s registry — invented numbers are unregistered (or worse, someone else’s product). Real retail needs GS1 licensing; everything internal is fair game.
What is the 13th digit doing?
A checksum over the other twelve — the reason tills catch misreads. The generator computes it (or verifies yours) with the exact modulo-10 weighting the spec demands.
