What this tool does
About the hreflang tag checker
The tool parses alternate links and compares language-region codes locally. Reciprocal return tags require data from the other pages and are not assumed.
How to use it
- Paste the page head or just its hreflang link elements.
- Read the table of locales and target URLs the markup declares.
- Review the flags: bad language-region codes, duplicate locales, relative URLs and missing x-default.
- Fix the tags, then check the partner pages too — return tags must exist on both ends.
Useful for
- Check one page’s alternate tags after an international template change.
- Catch the classic en-UK mistake (it is en-GB) before Google silently ignores the tag.
- Verify x-default is present and pointing at the right fallback page.

Hreflang Tag Checker FAQ
Why are my hreflang tags being ignored?
The usual suspects: invalid codes (en-UK, missing hyphens), relative URLs, or missing return tags on the alternate pages. This checker catches the first two locally; return tags need the other pages checked as well.
Do I need x-default?
It is optional but wise: it names the page for visitors who match none of your locales, typically your language-selector or global page.
