What this tool does

About the transit pass break-even calculator

Enter the pass price, single-journey fare, expected journeys and journeys per travel day. The calculator shows the break-even journey count without using stale local fares.

Method
Journeys To Break Even
pass price / single journey fare
Days To Break Even
journeys to break even / journeys per travel day
Period Saving
single journey fare × expected journeys - pass price
Assumptions
  • Pass and single-journey prices use the same currency and cover comparable travel.
  • Every expected journey would otherwise be charged at the entered single fare.
  • Discounts, zones, caps, expiry, transfer rules and unused value are included only through user inputs.

How to use it

  1. Enter the pass price and the single fare it replaces — your fares, not a stale table.
  2. Enter the journeys you honestly expect in the period.
  3. Read the break-even journey count and the period saving or loss.
  4. Check the break-even days against your actual travel days — that comparison decides it.

Useful for

  • Decide whether the monthly season ticket beats paying per journey on your real travel pattern.
  • Re-check an old season-ticket habit after moving to hybrid working.
  • See exactly how many journeys the pass has to earn before it pays for itself.

Transit Pass Break-Even Calculator FAQ

The pass loses by a little — should I still buy it?

Maybe: unlimited travel has value the arithmetic can’t see — spontaneous journeys, no fare fumbling, price protection. The tool gives you the honest number; the convenience premium is yours to price.

What about daily fare caps?

Where capping exists, your effective single-journey cost on heavy days is the cap, not the fare. Enter the capped figure for those journeys or the comparison flatters the pass.
